Accessibility NYC Meetup Recap: Inclusive Web-based Virtual Reality
On August 7, 2018, Accessibility NYC hosted a meetup entitled "Inclusive Web-based Virtual Reality: A11Y & WebXR Immerses the Visually Impaired." Presenters Roland Dubois and Ian Petrarca described different approaches to accessibility in web-based virtual reality, specifically an experience designed for visually impaired and blind users, showcased on the Oculus Go, empowered by spatial sound and audio navigation. They also touched on a collaborative project with Equal Entry, that uses spatial audio in a virtual representation of a critical NYC street crossing, to train and prepare blind users to navigate and orient themselves in the ever-changing urban jungle of Manhattan.

On July 10, 2018 Accessibility NYC hosted a Meetup entitled "Transdisciplinary and Inclusive Approaches to Accessibility." Presenter Claire Kearney-Volpe, PhD Candidate in NYU's Rehabilitation Sciences Program, Web Accessibility Fellow at CUNY and Research Fellow at the NYU Ability Project discussed some of the projects that she has been working on over the last 3 years as the project's Research Fellow.

On June 5, 2018, Accessibility NYC hosted a meetup entitled "Understanding Transportation Challenges for People With Disabilities in NYC." Presenter Jessica Murray, doctoral student in developmental psychology and a fellow for the Futures Initiative at The Graduate Center, CUNY, shared data from the qualitative research and feasibility study she has conducted on the complications disabled riders face on the city's subway system. She presented examples of both the technical and psychological challenges of the current transit system while highlighting the future of advocacy work in NYC.

On May 1, 2018, Accessibility NYC hosted a meetup entitled "LinkNYC Accessibility." Presenters Ruth Fasoldt, Kevin Green and Emily Pease described LinkNYC, a first-of-its-kind communications network replacing over 7,500 pay phones across the five boroughs with new structures called Links. They provided a live demonstration of LinkNYC's services and accessibility features as well as the network's superfast free public Wi-Fi.

On March 20th, Accessibility NYC hosted a meetup entitled "Diversity and Inclusion in the Arts." Presenter Stephanie Barton-Farcas, Founder and Artistic Director of Nicu’s Spoon Theater Company, described ways to maximize disabled artists in the arts. She also shared ideas for real-world problem solving, action plans, and how we might reconsider artists and disability in moments of political and technological change.

Accessibility NYC Meetup Recap: “Aira: AR to Enhance Information Access and Cultural Experiences for the Blind.”
On March 6, 2018, Accessibility NYC hosted a meetup at thoughtbot entitled, "Aira: AR to Enhance Information Access and Cultural Experiences for the Blind." Aira provides live audio descriptions to people who are blind or low vision by streaming in real-time a video feed from a camera worn by a user to a “highly trained remote human agent.” Presenter Marty Watts shared stories of the diverse ways Aira’s users, or as they refer to them, ‘Explorers’, utilize the service. These use-cases range from describing where to find a menu in a coffeeshop to describing a live-performance at a Disney theme park to describing this past summer’s solar eclipse as it happened
